A happy field trip participant searching the spoil pile for scientific specimens (Note: Collecting was allowed only under the control of the field trip guide, and all specimens remained at Messel).
The Messel pit is a world class locality which provides an unparalleled look at the Middle Eocene of Europe. Many significant fossils have been and continue to be found at the site. The site will continue to develop, with a major visitor center being planned. We would encourage any readers who have a chance to visit the area.
Major collections from Messel are housed at the Hessiches Landesmuseum in nearby Darmstad and at the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to visit these institutions because of time restrictions.
