For the collectors among you, there is a small private quarry that is located outside the boundary of the monument.
The privately owned Clare Quarry outside the Florissant National Monument. Public fee collecting is allowed - you have your choice of paying by the hour to split shale provided by the quarry operator, or you can buy a box of shale to split at your leisure. The quarry operator provides all of the tools you need and children are welcome. Further information can be obtained by contacting Nancy Clare Anderson at PO Box 126, Florissant, Colorado 80816; (719)748-1002.
Further information on the Florissant deposit is available at the monument website. Additionally, Dr. Herbert Meyer (the paleontologist at the monument) recently wrote a fine general interest book on Florissant. It is titled "The Fossils of Florissant" and was published in 2003 by Smithsonian Books.
